A physician could access the health status of a patient’s heart using a stethoscope. A stethoscope is a medical device initially invented to tune in to the internal sounds of a patient. An acoustic medical device used to understand how an internal organ functions based on their sound. Heart, lungs, stomach, and intestine are examined using a stethoscope.

It was until the advent of Echoes, there required a stethoscope to listen to the sounds of a heart. Echoes is an software application developed by a group of scientists from the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM), Maastricht University, The Netherlands, King's College London, UK and Cellule Studio, Leyton Studios, UK under the correspondence of Dr. Hongxing Luo.

Echoes provides the world’s 1^st large-scale database for recording a user’s heart sounds along their personal medical information (which is based the individual’s concern). Currently, it functions only in iPhones due to its microphone quality in comparison with others. So far, the application has recorded and maintains 100,000 recordings which are anticipated to be used by the researchers for further studies in expanding a smart phone to an “Electronic stethoscope”.
